The Harvest is Ready – the Tool Shed’s Empty
September 27 2010 by J. Shore

Have you ever thought about that scripture?

Matthew 9:37 (NASB) says, “Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.”

 • It mentions the harvest not just being ready but being plentiful.
 • It mentions the workers being few.
 • But it never mentions the tools, does it?

After all, every good farmer knows that it doesn’t matter how many people you have ready to help, if you don’t have the right tools, the harvest is going to go bad right where it stands.
In the text, Jesus is going through cities and villages teaching, proclaiming and healing. He felt compassion on the people because they were “distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.” (vs. 35-36)

As they say in the State Farm commercials, “I’m there.” My heart grieves for those who woke up this morning and said, “It’s Monday – now what do I do?”

We’re talking about people who are in the midst of life’s deepest troubles. Marital separation, divorce, spiritual desert, broken and almost broken families, discontent singles, abuse victims, abusers - the list is endless.

Several of these folks came to me and asked, “Who do you know that can recommend a resource so that I can get back on track?” At first, my response was “go to your pastor.” But if we all go to our pastors, let me just tell you, our pastors are going to be overwhelmed. And then I said, “Read your Bible” to which I was asked, “Okay…where?” I beseeched them to pray and to that they said, “I don’t know where or how to start.”

I get it. These are folks that have the prickling of the Holy Spirit – that little voice that says “do something and do something now” but in a world ripe of Biblical and Christian resources, don’t know where to get started.

And that’s when it hit me. I might not know of the best resources out there to recommend for each person or need, but I know there are hundreds of you that DO know.

So, invoking Matthew 9:38 in a real and practical way, I ask – what do you know, what do you recommend, where do you send people who want to pull their bootstraps up and get back on this horse we call life?

What can people put in the tool sheds of their hearts and lives to help them recover from where they’ve been? Here are a few needs I’ve heard in the last week:

 • Marriage – in various stages
 • Divorce – in various stages
 • Family – what does a healthy one look like and how can I get there?
 • Spiritual desert – how do I get back to God?
 • Forgiveness
 • Prayer
 • Personal Bible Study – what’s a good one for men, women and children?
 • Devotional/Quiet Time material – How can I focus my day on Christ?
 • Worship
There are other needs, for sure. And if you know of them and have resources for them, please post them. If you don’t feel comfortable commenting with your information below, please send me an email by clicking here.

The harvest is plentiful. The harvest is ready. Let’s equip the workers with the tools they need. Won’t you please help?

As NC Baptists we are blessed in the "tools" department. In a very purposely ambiguous way I note the following:

Need personal or group retreat time? Conferences and retreat centers like Caswell, Caraway, Hollifield.

Need family counseling of any king? CARENET thtough Baptist Hospital.

We have Divinity Schools in every corner of the state.

We offer conferences, clinics, seminars a plenty.

You can find any of these through the various websites.

In my travels across NC and among NC Baptists, I find that not knowing about these resources, to echo your post here, is the issue. So if we made ourselves aware, there might be more tools than we thought. I further agree that a simple "google search" brings back way more options than any one mind can process. But a call to an "in the know" NC Baptist should make this easy.

Of course, for me, a good old fashioned "mentor" relationship is the only way. Walking along side someone who has already "stepped in the holes" makes things so much better.

I know, I know . . . where do I find a good mentor?

Ask.

Good observations, Brother Shore!

I don't think any of us gets specific instant answers to the real questions of life. I think we tend to "catch it" over capturing it!

When Jesus said, "The Kingdom of God is in you," this was what he meant: "You disciples are expecting me to give you everything, but you need to do your part and recognize how God is working within you."

I recommend looking to fellow believers who have faced the worst, but survived.
Certainly, the Bible is full of such fellow strugglers.
Through prayer we begin to slow down / take a breath / sense where God is leading.

It is most important to realize that you see further through a tear than a telescope. In the hard places, God is with us. When it is over we can look back and see His presence and protection. None of us is promised a rose garden.

I say this---not from an ivory tower, but from a lifetime of joy and sorrow / success and failure / living now in a failed economy trying to make enough doing tree work to just pay my light bill and keep my employees busy. If you are fussing because the church budget has to be cut by 10%----try running a business making 30% of what it did 3 years ago!!!

BUT---God is in it all and provides what if need over what I want = my simple faith statement.

Although I feel that I can use some direction on a few of these topics myself, I did want to comment on a prayer. I think of prayer as one of the most important things that I do each day. I get to talk with my GOD regarding all aspects of my life that I have never been able to talk the same way to anyone else. Whether it be positive and praise things in my life, asking for forgiveness for thoughts, things I have said, things I have done, things I didn't say, things I didn't do, etc. or just talking with him about what I am think and searching for his direction. Sometimes he answers them immediately and sometimes it comes later, but I have to keep in mind that it is all in his time. Throughout the day, I find myself needing to discuss issues (good or bad) with someone and you just don't want to feel like you are wasting someone’s time, so I just go the Lord and talk with him about my troubles, thoughts, and decisions. I like being able to go to him with anything and in not certain specified manner as he is just open to just being yourself and talking about what is on your mind. He already knows what you are thinking, but just wants me to realize it and bring it to him for his guidance.
Don't worry about what he is thinking of you or how repetitious you may sound, as he just wants to love you and you to cling to him. I have to say that I feel a little embarrassed sometimes with what I want to discuss, but he is always there to listen.
