K. Allan Blume BR Editor | Free to be reconciled We all know that a great nation was born on July 4. But did you know that three of our presidents died on July 4, also? John Adams, our second president, and Thomas Jefferson, our third president, actually died on the same day, July 4, 1826 – the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Five years later, on July 4, 1831, our fifth president, James Monroe, passed away. History tells us that Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration along with John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. When George Washington retired from the presidency, John Adams became president and Thomas Jefferson became vice-president. The two men had disagreed politically on almost every issue throughout the Washington administration. Adams and Jefferson eventually became bitter enemies. Interestingly, the two former presidents reconciled in their retirement and became best of friends as they lived out their final years. Reconciliation is a great theme for believers. Jesus connected it to our worship. In Matthew 5:23-24, He said, "Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering." On this July 4, pray that believers will live this truth and apply it to our nation. At this time of great national division, pray for the kind of revival that will bring reconciliation and healing – beginning with us. A final thought: One of the great American stories born out of our freedoms is the Chick-fil-A company. I interviewed Dan Cathy, the company’s CEO, recently. Read the story in this week’s edition of the Biblical Recorder and it headlines this newsletter. I believe it will bless you as you celebrate America’s birthday. Note: The Biblical Recorder serves the local church and is your partner in the Great Commission. I hope you will count on us to be your news source. Please include us in your church budget and encourage your church family to subscribe to the print edition. I believe we will be a strong compliment to your church's mission. |
