K. Allan Blume BR Editor | The Calvinism debate The Biblical Recorder is happy to publish an article that Danny Akin originally wrote for SBC Life in 2006. At that time Calvinism had become a significant topic of discussion among Baptists. Akin’s skillful treatment of the subject was respected by both sides. Seven years later the debate has grown and his words need to be heard again. So we are delivering it to you in two issues of the Recorder: Aug. 17 and Aug. 31. Baptists who followed the many blog discussions on Calvinism and engaged in debate among peers have firmly planted their feet on the ground of their convictions or their traditions. But there are those who did not follow the discussion streams; perhaps because they thought it was a theological fad that would soon blow over. Or, perhaps many were drowning in pastoral ministry and could not devote time to follow the many excogitations on the subject. Many lay leaders were confused from the start. The debate was beyond their daily vocabulary, and their pastor never mentioned it. But they really want to understand. After fielding questions from the curious, but uninformed, we realized that a good summary of the issue was in order. Akin’s article is clearly the best treatment we could find. I believe it will help with the process of clarification and reasonable discussion of the merits of Calvinism and the concerns many have about Calvinistic theology. Please respond to the series with your comments. Send us an email, letter or add comments at the end of the article on BRnow.org. We welcome your views, but please discuss the issue, not the personalities. Also, we are excited about the new digital online version of the printed Biblical Recorder. I hope you will take time to check it out and consider the options that are best for you. Click here to read about all of the options for receiving your Biblical Recorder.
