Seth Brown BR Content Editor | Tensions remain between Christian, secular valuesIt seems like Christianity’s place in the public square is under constant scrutiny. One topic where that scrutiny becomes painfully sharp is tax exemption for religious institutions. Thinking in Public, a podcast hosted by Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, released an episode Sept. 14 that features an interview with Mark Oppenheimer, a vocal critic of tax exemption. The two public intellectuals had a lengthy debate that covered tax exemption issues in significant detail. Read a story about the conversation here. Christians should be concerned, but not alarmed, about the direction this national conversation is leading. The future of many churches and religious institutions may be at stake. Another nationwide topic of concern is transgenderism. An Oct. 5 pre-conference in Louisville, Ky., promises to address “Transgender Confusion and Transformational Christianity.” Read about it here. The topic is covered prior to the Association of Certified Counselors' annual conference Oct. 6-7. This year's theme is "Homosexuality: Compassion, Care and Counsel for People Who Struggle." Many churches are facing transgender and homosexuality issues. Resources that come from conferences like this can help Christians navigate the issues in loving and biblically faithful ways. There are other recent news stories that feature the tension between Christian values and and our increasingly secular culture. Read about Navy chaplain Wesley Modder who survived an attempt to remove him from his post for counseling with Christian truth. Also, did you know California passed a bill legalizing assisted suicide? Read what Southern Baptists have to say about it here.
