Seth Brown Executive Editor | Sex abuse & the SBC: the message is clear I write to you this week from Birmingham, Ala., where your Biblical Recorder staff is on site at the Southern Baptist Convention's (SBC) 2019 annual meeting. As this edition of the BRweekly hits your email inboxes, messengers are gearing up for their second day of proceedings. There is much to tell about the first day of the convention, and the SBC Pastors' Conference prior to that, but one thing is evident: Southern Baptists care deeply about addressing sex abuse in our churches. Many panel discussions, reports and other conversations have lamented the presence of such evil and called for decisive action in response. SBC President J.D. Greear has led us well in that response while unifying messengers around the "Gospel Above All." On Tuesday afternoon, messengers acted on amendments to SBC governing documents that enable our network of churches to better ensure the safety of our members, the integrity of our fellowship and most of all, the clarity of the gospel we proclaim. The work is not complete, but the message is clear. In faithfulness to our Lord Jesus Christ, and by His example, Southern Baptists are determined to care for the vulnerable among us. It has been encouraging to run into a good number of N.C. Baptists here in Birmingham. A notable example of N.C. representation came during the International Mission Board's "Sending Celebration." Many Southern Baptists were celebrated for their commitment to take the gospel to the nations, including John and Pat Gordy. John is a former missionary with the IMB and recently served as a strategy coordinator for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
