Focal Passage: Psalm 119:17-24
Psalm 119 reminds us that we are strangers on earth. We belong to another Kingdom. Though we know this is true, focusing on the unseen Kingdom often proves to be difficult. We need a blueprint. We need a reminder. We need help keeping our eyes on God. As we are constantly tempted to reach for satisfaction in people, work or entertainment, we are desperate for a tool that places our affections on the Lord.
This is what God’s word is to us. While we are pulled in every direction possible, God’s word steadies us and keeps us focused on Him. God’s commands show us what God is like. It is wisdom to us. When we read the scriptures, we are reading about the character of God. We get to know God by reading what He says about Himself. We get to encounter God by interacting with His word!
When we are familiar with God’s word, we are able to face life’s inevitable challenges. God offers us hope and help as we navigate our lives. He does not promise us an easy, pain-free existence, but He also doesn’t leave us without His truth. We can be certain that challenges will come. However, whether or not we have God’s word as a shield and guide during those times is up to us.
Knowing God’s word gives us God’s perspective. He is the only one who has an eternal view, knowing the end from the beginning. Because He is God in this way, His word can lead us faithfully into His will. The more we read and meditate on God’s word, the more we understand God’s purposes and intentions in the world. The scriptures give us insight to the mind and heart of God, helping us to see the world and our lives the way God sees them.
