SEBTS hires Jason Engle as assistant professor of Christian ministry
By Mary Asta Mountain, SEBTS
WAKE FOREST, N.C. – Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) and Judson College have announced the hiring of Jason Engle as assistant professor of Christian ministry and associate director of Ed.D. studies.
Engle, a longtime member of the Southeastern family, graduated with a Master of Divinity in Christian ministry in 2013 and earned a Doctor of Education in discipleship and spiritual formation in 2021. He received both degrees at Southeastern while serving as the pastor of students and discipleship at Westwood Baptist Church in Roxboro, N.C. After serving in this role for nearly 20 years, Engle stepped into the role of teaching pastor at Westwood and will continue serving in this capacity while teaching part-time on Southeastern’s faculty.
“As a two-time Southeastern grad, Jason embodies the mission of our school with his love for students and passion for the gospel,” said SEBTS Provost Scott Pace. “I’m confident that his scholarly expertise and decades of practical ministry experience will equip our students well to serve the church and fulfill the Great Commission.”
Over the past 20 years, God has developed in Engle a deep passion for student ministry, specifically ministry that prioritizes the spiritual flourishing and maturity of young men and women in the church. Sanctification and spiritual formation, he believes, should be the primary focus of student ministry.
“As a pastor, I know well the impact my time as a student at Southeastern has had, not only on me but also on our local church,” Engle said. “To get to be a part of that sacred stewardship of equipping leaders to serve local churches and fulfill the Great Commission is such a high calling and privilege.”
“I am especially excited,” he added, “about increased opportunities to help churches and student ministry leaders think deeply about how to faithfully partner with families in leading students to grow into spiritual maturity and lifelong devotion to King Jesus.”
While completing his EdD, Engle also began teaching adjunctly at Southeastern. He then went on to help in the development and creation of Southeastern’s Doctor of Ministry (DMin) in student ministry, which launched in 2024.
“I have known Jason and observed his faithful ministry for a number of years,” said Southeastern President Danny Akin. “He has already served us well as an adjunct professor, and I’m excited that he will be even more involved in training men and women for Gospel ministry in the days ahead here at Southeastern. He is a blessed addition.”
In his new role as assistant professor of Christian ministry, Engle will teach courses in Christian ministry and student ministry as well as a variety of courses within both the DMin and EdD programs.
“It is such an honor to teach at Southeastern and especially to serve in an administrative role in the EdD program I completed as a student,” Engle said. “I am so proud to be an alum of an institution that truly is shaped and driven by its stated mission.”
