DALLAS (BP) — The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) will be hosting a conversation with Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti June 10 from 12-2:00 pm during the SBC annual meeting.
“As we gather with thousands of Southern Baptists in Dallas, the conversation around protecting our kids from the radical ways modern culture is targeting our children has taken on a critical urgency,” said ERLC President Brent Leatherwood.
“The Supreme Court’s consideration of Tennessee’s law, which seeks to protect vulnerable minors from irreversible medical procedures, is a pivotal moment,” Leatherwood said.
The event “Protecting our Kids Before the Supreme Court: A Conversation with Attorney General Skrmetti” will also feature Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Alliance Defending Freedom Ryan Bangert.
Leatherwood, Skrmetti and Bangert will discuss the consequential U.S. Supreme Court case U.S. v. Skrmetti, which centers on a Tennessee law that empowers the state to protect minors.
“This event, as part of the Southern Baptist annual meeting, highlights the moral and legal responsibility we have to safeguard children from harm. We must stand firm in supporting laws that protect the most vulnerable among us,” Leatherwood told Baptist Press.
Registration is open for the event in Hutchison Convention Center Ballrooms C2-C3.
Prior to the conversation with Skrmetti, Leatherwood will moderate a panel discussion on Baptist cooperation at the Supreme Court with the following state convention executive directors:
- Nathan Lorick, executive director of Southern Baptists of Texas Convention
- Julio Guarneri, executive director of Baptist General Convention of Texas Convention
- Randy Davis, executive director of Tennessee Baptist Mission Board
