K. Allan Blume BR Editor | N.C. annual meeting 'refreshing' The 2012 annual meeting of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention concluded last night in Greensboro. The number of messengers totaled 1,604 with an additional 281 visitors registered. There was a uniqueness to this year’s meeting. The pre-convention emphasis on prayer and spiritual awakening led to a worshipful atmosphere for the sessions. Some messengers called it "refreshing." Others told me they found it to be the most enjoyable convention they have attended. Monday night’s worship was powerful. Mark Harris’ president’s address Tuesday morning was an essential, timely prophetic word. Tuesday night’s session was reserved for a commissioning service for North American Mission Board (NAMB) missionaries. Kevin Ezell, president of NAMB, told messengers his goal is to see a net gain of 500 Southern Baptist churches each year. He said, "Southern Baptists lose 900 churches each year." These churches die from lack of funds and low attendance. Ezell said NAMB’s focus is on both church revitalization and church planting. Dying churches need revitalization – a fresh start. At the same time, many parts of North America are in desperate need of new churches. "You can drive 3 hours in some parts of Canada and never see a Baptist church," he said. N.C. Baptists can be confident that our state convention and the Southern Baptist Convention are on the cutting edge of serious, biblical ministry. A few stories from the convention are posted on BRnow.org. More will be posted over the next week. Read them, and be encouraged. Pray that this year’s annual meeting was only the beginning of a fresh movement of revival in our state and nation. Email me: [email protected] |
