K. Allan Blume BR Editor | Blinders are killing us The death of missionary Kyra Karr at the age of 30 is heart wrenching. It is tragic and unnecessary. My heart breaks for her husband, children, parents, friends and those whose lives could have been changed by the gospel message she was committed to living and sharing. As I pray for this family, I pray that our culture will acknowledge the blinders we wear that caused this tragedy and 241 others like it every day. Our broad acceptance of alcohol is literally killing us. If Karr had died from a bullet, no doubt screams would rise from politicians whose agenda is to control the ownership of guns. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in 2013 about 90 people died daily from a gun – sixty percent of those deaths were suicides. However approximately 242 people die daily as a result of someone’s "excessive drinking," as the CDC calls it. Somehow it’s okay that almost three times as many people die from alcohol use daily than by gun use. Does anyone have an agenda to control alcohol? A few weeks ago a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill got drunk. He drove his parent’s vehicle the wrong way on Interstate 85, colliding head-on with a family from the Charlotte area, killing a mother and two children. Three second-degree murder charges were filed against the student. This student’s life has been drastically altered by a drink of alcohol. His parent’s lives have been changed. But most significantly a mother and two children were denied life. This one student’s sad story can be repeated 241 times every day. The awful story of this mother and children is repeated 241 times daily. The heart-breaking story of Kyra Karr will continue to happen with inexcusable frequency – until we remove the blinders.
