K. Allan Blume BR Editor | Keep celebrating July 4th I hope you enjoyed a great July 4th celebration with friends and family. If citizens of this nation will stay focused on the reasons why we celebrate this day, maybe the founding principles of America will direct us to elect sensible men and women to lead the country, the states and our local communities. That is certainly my prayer! We’re hearing a lot of talk in political campaigns about making America great. No human being can make America great – not with a strong military defense, a growing economy or better education. These are products of greatness, not catalysts of greatness. Greatness comes from the act of humble submission to and worship of the eternal God who is the Father of Jesus Christ. When America welcomes this kind of true greatness in our lives, we will see the fruit of greatness. Pastor Jake Thornhill of Life Community Church in Jamestown posted this powerful reminder recently on his Facebook page: "Classic quote from Alexis de Tocqueville in the late 1840s worth remembering and repeating; ‘I sought for the greatness and strength of America in her spacious harbors and ample rivers but I didn’t find it there, in her fertile fields and boundless prairies but I didn’t find it there. In her rich mines and worldwide commerce but I didn’t find it there. Not until I went into the churches and found the pulpits aflame with righteousness, then I discovered the source of strength in America.’" If you don’t know about Alexis de Tocqueville’s search for America’s greatness, look it up. His story will take you right to the heart of our nation’s greatest problem. On Sunday, July 3, I was privileged to preach the Word in the morning service at Green Street Baptist Church in High Point. It was a great patriotic celebration with outstanding music and fellowship. Pastor Brandon Ware is giving strong, biblical leadership to this great church. Keep it up, brother! It was an honor to fill this pulpit and to enjoy the worship experience with the Green Street family. For some who serve in church ministry July is a "slow down" time. Many churches will suspend Wednesday night activities, Sunday night services or other regularly scheduled ministries. Staff vacations are very common this month. To others it gets very busy in July with VBS, mission trips and camps. Whatever your schedule might be, as you serve our awesome God this month, I encourage you to seek Him with a whole heart. It is an honor to serve our Father in partnership with you! |
