K. Allan Blume BR Editor | Minority rule or majority rule? Is the new standard for America, "minorities rule"? A new Gallup poll says that 3.4 percent of Americans are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender. Yet, judging by the massive attention the media gives to this minority and the wave of new laws ordering special treatment for them, one would think they must make up at least 60 percent of the population. The atheist population is said to be less than 5 percent of Americans. However, with the help of the ACLU, Americans United and other anti-Christian groups, atheists are working diligently to force their views on the majority through the judicial system. One more example of their effectiveness came to us through a very liberal judge in Wisconsin last Friday. Federal Judge Barbara Crabb struck down the portion of a 1954 federal law that allows clergy to exclude for federal income tax purposes a portion of their income as a housing allowance. You can be sure this is not the end of the story for the atheist lobbyists. They are pushing for more severe restrictions on Christians, including the removal of tax exempt status for non-profits. But, you can also be sure this is not the end of the story for Christians. Among Baptists, GuideStone and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission are fighting for religious freedom. You can follow these important developments in the Biblical Recorder, including this updated story. Be thankful that this great nation was given birth by courageous men and women like the Pilgrims who came to these shores in search of religious liberty. As you enjoy the next few days with family, food, football, parades and other festive elements, remember to give thanks for the convictions of those who paved the way for this annual celebration. And be prepared to exercise your convictions in the same sacrificial manner. Please remember to support the annual Thanksgiving Offering for Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina. Your gift will rescue some beautiful children from the grip of oppressive forces in our state and lead them to know Christ as their Savior. Read their stories and give generously. Happy Thanksgiving!
