K. Allan Blume BR Editor | Can we just deal with the truth? The turmoil in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is getting a lot of national attention. Although there are times when media focus on issues that are not important to the average Baptist, that is not the case this time. I am being asked more questions from the “average” Baptist than usual. There is a high level of concern among the brothers and sisters in our Baptist family. This week’s print issue of the Biblical Recorder addresses some of those matters. Regarding the election of a new SBC president, some have pumped out an overdose of deception that needs to be corrected. Please read this interview with North Carolina Baptists’ executive director-treasurer, Milton Hollifield. He calls for the next president to stand firm on specific biblical issues and corrected some misinformation about The Summit Church’s loyalty to the state convention. We also published an article that gave the two presidential candidates a forum to clarify false information that has been published about them. Finally, in this week's editorial I shared some convictions about revival, judgement and the SBC mess. Let’s get something on the record. The deception being peddled by some in Baptist life is not of God. It is wrong! In a face-to-face discussion with religious people, Jesus said the devil “...was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it,” John 8:44. These harsh words expose an important distinction. God deals only with the truth. He never lies or deceives. On the other hand, Satan deals only with lies and deceit. He never speaks the truth unless he uses a truthful statement in a deceptive way. If something truthful needs to be stated, it can be spoken without blending deception into the mix. Truth does not need the help of deception to get its message across. Truth stands in its own strength. Whatever issues Baptists address in Dallas – elections, resolutions, motions or accusations – may truth prevail. That is my prayer. Please join me in this prayer.
