Iorg: Getting what we asked for
K. Allan Blume BR Editor | The Gideons and Martin Luther On Saturday, Sunday and Monday I spoke at three different events across the state that promoted the powerful ministry of Gideons International. I have great appreciation for the men and women who sacrificially give their time, energy and personal resources to distribute God’s Word to people of every tribe, tongue and nation of the world. God used a Gideon New Testament to draw me, my parents and my siblings to Christ, so I have an eternally thankful heart toward Gideons. Did you know that five percent of all money given to the ministry of Gideons International comes from North Carolina? That means one in twenty Bibles placed by a Gideon around the world is given by the people of our state. What an incredible statement of generosity and support for the distribution of God’s Word! Bibles placed in schools, hospitals, military bases, prisons and hotels world wide are changing lives. I hope you and your church family are supportive of this great ministry. God will not use everything you and I say or write, but He promised that He will always use His Word! This Monday most people will have their focus on Halloween. Many churches will have a fall festival or similar alternative event to reach their communities and provide a safe environment for families. At the same time, many will remember an event that literally changed the world and could be credited for the eventual birth of the United States of America. Monday, October 31 is the 499th anniversary of Martin Luther’s courageous act of nailing his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of All Saints Church in Wittenburg, Germany. The resulting Protestant Reformation challenged corruption and unbiblical theology in the Catholic Church. I believe Luther’s convictions and the theology of the reformers have impacted every one of us. As you remember this significant event, give thanks for the courage of godly men and women that have been used mightily by God in history to set the stage for the advance of the gospel worldwide. Also, here is something to ponder: Luther set the stage for the Gideons to make God's Word available to the common people of the world. How great is our God! Keep praying for the people in central and eastern North Carolina who suffered damage from Hurricane Matthew and for the volunteers who are ministering in these regions.
