COLUMN: The paradox of surrender

K. Allan Blume BR Editor | The Baptist 'sin list' I did not know the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) had a "sin list" – other than everything God says is sin in His Word. But apparently, an LGBTQ advocacy group believes we have a list that can be edited. Since the SBC is meeting in Phoenix next week, and this gathering constitutes our one annual opportunity to act as an official body, a group is requesting that Baptists have homosexuality and transgenderism "removed from the sin list." I’m not kidding. The group has announced plans to "politely disrupt" the annual meeting. It would be highly presumptuous of Baptists to take such action since we did not put those matters on the list. Furthermore, we are unwilling to re-write the Bible and unwilling to stretch the boundaries of Biblical truth. With all due respect, are they asking Baptists to change our interpretation of scripture? Seriously? With respect for the opinions of others, Baptists hear variations of the same request every year – and every week between annual meetings, also. This is a case of yet another advocacy group asking another denomination to adjust to the personal preferences of a vocal few. Many denominations have bowed to such pressure and abandoned scripture. Don't expect Baptists to do that. Contrary to popular views, truth is not fluid. Baptists do not believe we are all-knowing or that we have reached perfection. But we can read. And we can discern what the Bible says is right and what it says is wrong. With all due respect for those who disagree with us, we invite the LGBTQ group to change their interpretation of scripture. That is not in the realm of impossibility. I am glad to hear that Frank Page has invited the LGBTQ group to meet with him. I hope that meeting happens. Pray for SBC 2017 in Phoenix next week. Pray that many will come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord because of our witness in Phoenix and beyond. Pray that God will be glorified in everything that happens in these meetings. Your Biblical Recorder staff will be there to keep you informed! People need to know! |
